Chile al igual que El Salvador, República Dominicana, Nicaragua, Malta y El Vaticano, prohíben y penalizan todo tipo de aborto incluido el aborto terapéutico.
Hoy en Chile se ha retomado la discusión sobre el aborto a propósito del envío, por parte del gobierno, del proyecto de ley de interrupción del embarazo por tres causales: violación, inviabilidad del feto y riesgo de la vida de la madre.
“No hay libertad donde solo algunos pueden elegir”: En nuestra carta fundacional apelamos a la profundización de los derechos de la ciudadanía, a combatir las desigualdades y la injusticia, marco en el cual el aborto tiene cabida como una discusión de derechos. Por tanto frente a la discusión que se está dando en el país la postura de Revolución Democrática es:
- Apoyar la iniciativa de despenalización del aborto.
- Apoyar la reposición del aborto terapéutico por las tres causales: inviabilidad fetal, riesgo de vida de la madre y violación.
- Avanzar en la defensa del aborto legal.

Campaign for legal abortion #YenChileCuando
If you live outside of Chile, or you will be going out of the country during the next few weeks, we invite you to join our campaign for a new law depenalizing abortion in Chile.
Since Augusto Pinochet signed a bill in his last days in power in 1989, Chile is part of a very short list of countries –along with El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Malta and the Vatican- that imposes a total ban on abortion, forbidding it in all of its forms (including therapeutic reasons), and criminalizing women who interrupt their pregnancies, as well as the medical professionals who assist them.
The debate on abortion in our country is being reignited these days as a consequence of a recent bill sent to Congress by the Chilean government. The bill proposes the legalization of pregnancy interruption in three circumstances: if the mother’s life is in danger, if a foetus’ survival is considered unviable, and in cases of rape resulting in pregnancy.
“There is no freedom when only some are able to chose”: in our foundational charter, we at Revolución Democrática, appeal to the strengthening of citizen’s rights and the continuous struggle against inequalities and injustice. Within that context, we conceive the debate on abortion primarily as a discussion about women´s rights. Consequently, facing the current debate in our country, our position as Revolución Democrática is:
- To support all initiatives aiming at the decriminalization of abortion.
- To support the current bill, aiming at the reinstatement of legal therapeutic abortion in three cases: rape, unviable foetus, and risk to the life of the mother.
- To move forward in the defence of the legalization of abortion as a woman’s right to choose.
If you would like Chile to abandon the short list of countries that impose a total ban on abortion, we invite you to participate in the citizen activation campaign organized by the Gender Front of Revolución Democrática #YenChileCuando (that can be roughly translated as “And when in Chile?)

- We are calling for women and men, alone or in groups, to take a photograph showing a written message saying:

- Send us your photograph, individualizing yourself (name, occupation, country, and Twitter account if you have one), to the following e-mail: frentedegenero@revoluciondemocratica.cl and we will add you to the list of supporters of our campaign.
- On the 26 of February, share your photograph in social networks using the hashtag #YenChileCuando, and we will share them and retweet them through our official accounts.
- Remember that this campaign starts on the 26 of February. Please invite your friends that will be travelling or those who live abroad, to join. And tell them to invite more people!
